Custom Bearing Components

Hartford is a world leader in the development and manufacture of bearing parts and other rolling motion solutions for OEMs worldwide, including:

Bearing Parts

Hartford bearing parts, particularly races, are typically manufactured from a forged blank or pipe / tube stock. The part is then machined and ground to precise ID, OD and width. Bearing races must withstand the high loading imparted by the rolling elements. This loading is theoretically a point in ball bearings and a line in roller bearings.

Races

Races are most often manufactured from 52100 steel (bearing quality chrome steel), which is valued for its mechanical strength, high hardness and excellent wear resistance. Hardness is typically Rockwell C 58 to 62.

Retainers

Retainers hold and separate the rolling element. Some consist of only a retainer plus rolling elements, and, unlike other bearing parts, are not subjected to high forces and loading. Several fabrication methods are used. Steel cages are generally produced by stamping. Two “halves” are often riveted together. Brass is also used in some stamped retainers. Plastic retainers are often produced by injection molding, with nylon and acetyl (Delrin) the most common materials. In a few applications, the separators are machined.

Rolling Elements

Rolling elements are also considered bearing components, and include balls, rollers, and spherical end rollers. Like other bearing parts, the most common material is 52100 steel, (bearing quality chrome steel.)
